What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a process of guided focus and relaxation that allows the subconscious part of your mind (the part that is in charge of your habits and automatic behaviors) to be open to positive suggestions.
How Hypnosis Works
Hypnosis works because your mind is guided into a relaxed, focused state where the behavior changes you desire can be accepted by your subconscious mind as part of your automatic behavior. In other words, you’re brain is very open to suggestions.
Most of what we do every day is automatic, which is why it’s so difficult to control our own behavior by just making the decision to do so. If we had conscious control over our problems, we wouldn’t have any problems!
Our subconscious takes care of most of our behavior because if you had to consciously think about every action and behavior you performed every minute of every day, you wouldn’t be able to function. You don’t have to think about how to walk, talk, or brush your teeth, or even how to return a handshake- these tasks have already been embedded in your subconscious behavior.
Remember when you were first learning how to drive a car? It took focus and concentration to place your foot on the right pedal, use the turn signal, and make those left hand turns… Hundreds of miles and years later, how many times have you driven to work and realized you had no memory of even making the trip? You no longer have to think about the mechanics of driving because the behavior has been taken over by your subconscious.
Another way of looking subconscious behavior is to compare it a computer. When you hit the tab key or right click on a mouse, your computer programming is automatically going to perform the action it’s been programmed to do. Our minds also have “default” settings- (you see a cookie, you eat it! you’re stressed, you crave a cigarette! you see your boss walk into the room, you feel incompetent!), which, just like those on your computer, can be changed.
The “magic” of hypnosis is that it is simply a way to access your subconscious, (without being stopped by all your “stuff”) so that your desired suggestions are deposited directly and the changes in your behavior and responses can be made safely and comfortably.
